When: Saturday 4 July until Saturday 12 September 2026
Audience: Aimed at children aged 4+
Turn up the volume on reading this summer and Read to the Beat with this year’s Summer Reading Challenge.
This free national initiative is delivered by The Reading Agency in partnership with Croydon Libraries and powered by Universal Music Group UK.
The Challenge launches in all Croydon Libraries from Saturday 4 July. Children who sign up can read great books, discover new authors and take part in free activities. This year’s theme invites children to explore the link between stories and songs, and how reading and music spark imagination and creativity.
The 2026 Challenge is brought to life with vibrant illustrations by award-winning author and illustrator, Harry Woodgate.
Children across the borough, aged 4+, are invited to visit their local Croydon library to sign up Read to the Beat and complete the Challenge by reading six books. Find your nearest Croydon library.
Croydon Libraries offer a wide range of books to borrow or download e-books or e-audiobooks from our digital library. All children who complete the challenge will receive a medal, certificate and be entered into the prize draw!
We are looking for volunteers aged 13+ to help with this year's Summer Reading Challenge 2026: Read to the Beat. For more information and to apply click here.
